Poonam is a director for stage and screen.
Poonam is co-artistic director of 3Fates theatre company with designer Alice Malia, where major projects include Return, To Close Your Eyes Is To Travel and Dark River.
Previously an Artistic Associate at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Poonam has also directed for Soho Theatre New Writing Programme; Kali Theatre’s New Writing Festivals and as part of the Royal Court International Residency.
Alongside her extensive new writing and devising experience Poonam has worked on classical texts for some of the country’s leading institutions: assisting Richard Jones on Hobson's Choice and Trevor Nunn on Skellig for the Young Vic and Sean Holmes on Julius Caesar for the RSC.
She is an alumni of the National Theatre Studio Directors Programme and the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab, New York, through which she directed her adaptation of A Temporary Matter by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Jhumpha Lahiri.
She is passionate about developing diverse stories, perspectives and talent, having worked with writers including Inua Ellams, Satinder Chohan, Matthew Nicholls, Tanika Gupta, Parv Bancil, Iman Qureshi, Michael Bhim, Hanif Kureishi, Yasmeen Khan, Michael McMillan and Kwame Kwei Armah.
Her productions include; Bells by Yasmin Whittaker Khan - a modern day courtesan story set in a brothel/halal butcher shop with a Velvet Underground/Nusrat Ali Khan soundtrack. HTRWB by Sabina England - a punk rock greek tragedy about a mother daughter relationship visually influenced by graphic novels. Return by Dina Mousawi and 3Fates - A Heroine’s journey from Bradford to Baghdad. With a raw, poetic and direct DIY aesthetic and open source multimedia technology and Speed by Iman Qureshi - A heartfelt speed dating comedy with a transgender hero.
Poonam is currently working with playwright Azma Dar on Noor a new play about British WW2 female agent Noor Inayat Khan. Poonam received the Michael Grandage Company bursary in 2017 to develop Noor into a full production.
Poonam directed her third short film Home Girl by Iman Qureshi, produced by Isabel Steuble-Johnson as part of the Film London 2018 'London Calling' slate.
